in 2018, the royal institution of chartered surveyors (rics) published its practice-orientated roadmap for our industry and clients to achieve the UN sustainable development goals.
this publication and the accompanying tools provided a framework for us to start conversation with clients and teams about how we can use their projects to work toward the UN sdgs.
the united nations global compact is a call to companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and take actions that advance societal goals.
in 2010, it published a framework for implementing the principles of the UN global compact. the framework provides a management model for translating the core ten principles into value-enhancing management practices.
the global reporting initiative [gri] helps businesses and governments worldwide understand and communicate their impact on critical sustainability issues such as climate change, human rights, governance and social well-being. this enables real action to create social, environmental and economic benefits for everyone.
gri promotes the use of its reporting principles for small- and medium-sized enterprise, as well as the multi-nationals.
building on previous work, including: ‘the UN sustainable development goals in practice’ and ‘the ethics of architectural practice’, in may 2020 riba released a publication that seeks to drive forward its commitment to the UN sdgs and to call on the riba membership to come together to help accelerate progress towards achieving the goals by 2030, in this the ‘decade of action’
through this collaborative piece, the riba seeks to engage with its membership by providing some guidance on implementing the UN global compact principles and sdgs in architectural practice; encouraging discussion and debate about ethical issues and stimulating the sharing of information and ideas within the construction industry.
